The University of Human Development (UHD), in collaboration with the Shar Organisation for Human Development, convened a panel titled ‘Cosmetic Surgery between Necessity and Legal Liability’ on 17 October 2026. Held in the Seminar Hall, the panel featured Dr Asos Namiq, a lecturer at UHD, and Dr Gashin Kamal, a specialist in dermatology and cosmetology.

The panel addressed various issues related to cosmetic surgery in Kurdistan, which is on the rise, particularly among women. The discussions focused on the medical necessity of these procedures and the laws that regulate the industry. A major highlight was that cosmetic surgery differs from other surgical procedures because it is largely optional; the patient can choose not to undergo the procedure and still live a healthy life. Due to this distinction, the panellists noted that cosmetic surgeries should be performed based on formal contracts between the patient and the doctor or hospital, with both sides legally bound to honour the terms. In the event of a breach, legal liability arises.

The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, featuring comments from the attendees, who were primarily students from the Law Department.
