2025-10-29
The College of Nursing at the University of
Human Development hosted a panel on the 'communicable disease control and
immunization challenges in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region', featuring two
doctors, namely Asst Prof. Dr Ahmed M Amin and Asst Prof. Dr Abdulfatah H
Hawrami. The panel was moderated by Asst Lecturer Mr Ari Jamal Hassan. It took
place at Professor Dr Ali Qaradaghi Hall on October 28, 2025. A large audience of students from the
Nursing and Medical Laboratory Sciences departments, along with several
lecturers, attended the panel. Asst Prof. Dr Amin spoke about infectious
diseases and provided details about their categories: endemic, epidemic, and
pandemic. He elaborated on the developments of these infections and the methods
of combating them. He emphasised that these diseases can be prevented, or their
spread can be limited, if proper procedures are followed. Asst Prof. Dr Hawrami discussed vaccination
and its effectiveness in fighting infectious diseases. He delved into the
challenges of vaccination in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, stating that there
are many obstacles to proper vaccination of children and people in general,
especially during pandemics. He mentioned that education, awareness, and health
literacy are essential in aiding the vaccination process, along with sound
policy, administration, and management by political authorities. He also
pointed to the issue of disease prevention in Kurdistan and noted that there is
insufficient policy in place regarding that matter. The panel lasted more than an hour and
concluded with questions and comments from the audience.
